Udaipur Travel Guide

The city of Udaipur is a lovely land around the Azure water lakes hemmed in by the lush hills of the Aravalis. The medieval attractions of the city are its chief draw, but the scenic beauty of Udaipur and its surroundings is also a major attraction for the tourists. There are beautiful lakes, man made as well as natural which gave Udaipur the name of 'Lake City' or 'Venice of the east'.

Overlooking the aquamarine expanses of the lake Pichhola stands the splendid city palace-a marvel in granite and marble. Of the original eleven gates of the Udaipur City, only five remain. The Suraj pol or Sun Gate on the eastern side is the main entrance to the city. Several palaces of interest around Udaipur, including the majestic Chittaurgarh the mountain fortress of Kumbhalgarh, beautiful Jain temples of Ranakpur, Eklingli and Nathdwara and the cool retreat of Mt. Abu make the visit to Udaipur a memorable one.

City Palace, Located in the heart of the city of Udaipur and towering over the Lake Pichola the Palace is a majestic architectural marvel towering over the lake on a hill surrounded by crenellated walls, it is a conglomeration of courtyards, pavilions, terraces corridors rooms and hanging gardens. The original construction of the palace was pioneered by Maharana Udai Singh of the Sisodia clan soon after he founded the city of Udaipur. Subsequent Maharanas added their own structures within the palace complex later, but interestingly there is no sign of any inconsistency in the overall appearance. Infact, the entire City Palace complex exudes a beautiful harmony and uniformity in its construction work. The main entrance is through the triple arched gate. The Tripolia with eight marble porticos, the Maharanas were weighed under the gate in gold, the equivalent amount of which was distributed among the populace.

Jagdish Temple

Lake Palace
The Lake Palace is one of the most beautiful palaces in the world, arising out of the Turquoise Waters of the Pichola like an elegant fantasy in white marble. The Lake palace was built in the 17th century on a natural foundation of 4 acres of rock. It was initially called Jagniwas after its founder Maharana Jagjit Singh.
